Social Media Glossary: 40 Social and AI Terms, Plainly Defined
Reach, views, engagement rate, UGC, CPM, GEO, prompt: a social media and AI glossary with short definitions and links to the articles that go deeper.
By Hadrien Bonato-Pape · · Strategy
This social media glossary defines, in a sentence or two, the terms you run into in analytics dashboards, scheduling tools and ad platforms: reach, views, engagement rate, UGC, CPM, GEO, prompt and about thirty more. Where we've covered a topic in depth, each definition links to the full article.
Terms are grouped by theme: metrics, formats, strategy, advertising and AI. Platform-specific definitions follow the wording of each platform's help center as of October 2026. Platforms rename their metrics from time to time, so check the exact label in your app. If your first question is what AI can actually take off your plate, start with our pillar guide to the AI social media manager.
Social media glossary: the metrics
What each metric counts
Unique accounts
- Reach: someone who sees your post three times counts once
- Accounts engaged
Displays
- Views: every display or play, including repeats by the same account
- Impressions: the total number of displays, an older name still used by several platforms
Actions
- Interactions: likes, comments, saves, shares
- Profile activity: profile visits, follows, taps to your website
Reach (accounts reached)
The number of unique accounts that saw a piece of content at least once. Instagram calls it "Accounts reached" and notes in its insights help page that the figure is an estimate. Someone who sees your post three times counts once. Why it moves: why your Instagram reach is dropping.
Views
The number of times content was displayed or played, including repeat views by the same account. On Instagram, views cover Reels, posts, Stories, live videos and ads; for a Reel, every play or replay counts.
Impressions
The older name, still used by several platforms and tools, for the total number of times content was displayed. Instagram distinguishes reach from impressions, which can include multiple displays to the same account, and now leads with views.
Interactions
What people do with your content: likes, comments, saves, shares and, depending on the format, replies or sticker taps. "Accounts engaged" counts the unique accounts behind those actions.
Engagement rate
Interactions divided by a base (reach, views or followers), shown as a percentage. There's no single formula, so always compare using the same one. The formulas side by side: how to calculate engagement rate.
Watch time
The total time a video was watched, replays included. Instagram calculates a Reel's average watch time by dividing watch time by the number of initial plays.
Profile activity
Actions people take after seeing your content: profile visits, follows, taps to your website. It's often the metric that connects a post to a real result.
Insights
The free analytics dashboard each network provides. On Instagram, insights require a public account and cover up to the last 90 days. To decide what to track: how to measure social media performance.
ROI
Return on investment: what your social efforts bring in, compared with what they cost (time, tools, ad spend). On social, the hard part is attribution, so define in advance which actions you'll count as results.
Formats
Reel
A short vertical video on Instagram and Facebook, built for discovery by people who don't follow you yet. On length: how long a Reel should be.
Story
Vertical content that disappears from your profile after 24 hours unless you add it to a Highlight. Instagram still keeps its insights for up to two years.
Carousel
A post with several images or videos people swipe through. On Instagram, it's the format for explaining things and for content people save. See the slide-by-slide structure and how many slides to use.
LinkedIn carousel (document post)
On LinkedIn, a "carousel" is in practice a document, usually a PDF, shown page by page. How to make one: AI LinkedIn carousel generator.
Shorts
YouTube's short vertical videos, separate from long-form uploads. See our YouTube guide.
Collab post
An Instagram post co-authored by several accounts and shown to each account's followers once the invite is accepted. How it works: Instagram collab posts.
Hook
The first line of a caption or the first seconds of a video, the part that decides whether people keep going. Examples: 30 hooks by platform.
Hashtag
A keyword preceded by "#" that files content under a topic. Its role, and how many to use, differ by network: how many hashtags, and which ones.
Strategy
Editorial line
The document that sets who you post for, what about, in what tone, and what you never post. Template: the one-page editorial line.
Content pillars
The three to five topic families you rotate between. Method: find your content pillars.
Content calendar
The dated plan of what goes out where. Key dates for next year: the 2027 marketing calendar.
Brand DNA
What makes a brand recognizable without its logo: voice, values, colors, products, audience. See brand DNA for social media.
Algorithm
The system that decides which content each person sees and in what order. Every network runs its own: understanding social media algorithms.
Posting cadence
The publishing rhythm you can actually sustain. Benchmarks to reason with: how often to post on Instagram.
UGC (user-generated content)
Photos, videos or reviews posted by customers rather than the brand. Ask the creator's permission before you repost, and credit them. Paid creator partnerships come with disclosure rules of their own.
Content repurposing
Turning one piece of content (an article, a video, a webinar) into several formats. Method: repurpose content into 10 formats.
Social media manager
The person who runs a brand's accounts: content, replies, reporting. What the role costs: social media manager cost; for agencies: AI tool for social media agencies.
Audit
A health check of your accounts: profiles, cadence, formats, results. The quick version: a 30-minute social media audit.
Advertising
Boost
Turning an existing post into an ad from inside the app, with simplified targeting. When to prefer it over a full campaign: boost a post or run a real ad.
CPM, CPC, CTR, CPA, ROAS
Cost per thousand impressions, cost per click, click-through rate (clicks divided by impressions), cost per action and return on ad spend (revenue divided by spend). All explained in CPM, CPC, CTR, CPA and ROAS explained.
Auction
How ad platforms like Meta decide which ad to show and at what price. Your cost depends on competition and on your objective: how much Instagram ads cost.
Safe zones
The margins of a vertical creative where the interface (account name, buttons, caption) covers the image. See ad creative formats and safe zones.
Spark Ads
TikTok's ad format that promotes an existing organic post. See TikTok ads for small businesses.
ChatGPT Ads
Ads shown below ChatGPT's answers. How they work: ChatGPT Ads explained.

Artificial intelligence
Generative AI
Models that produce text, images, voice or video from an instruction. Uses for social: generative AI for social media content.
Prompt
The written instruction you give an AI. The more context it carries (audience, tone, format, facts), the less generic the output.
Brief
A structured prompt for one specific piece of content: goal, audience, message, format, constraints. Template: how to write an AI content brief.
Hallucination
A false statement an AI produces with confidence: a made-up number, date or quote. Hence the rule: every fact gets checked before it's published.
GEO (generative engine optimization)
The practices that help a brand get cited or recommended in AI assistants' answers, such as ChatGPT's. Pillar guide: get recommended by ChatGPT; measurement: measure your visibility in AI answers.
Automation
Handing repetitive tasks to a tool: drafting, scheduling, publishing, pulling numbers. Full guide: automate your social media.
Scheduling
Setting the publish date and time in advance. Instagram Help allows scheduling up to 30 days ahead (as of October 2026). For video: can you schedule a Reel.
How to use this glossary
Two tips. First, when a tool or a report quotes a metric, look up its exact definition in the app through the info icon; Instagram, for one, shows a definition for each metric. Second, never compare two numbers calculated differently, such as an engagement rate based on reach and another based on followers.
Oposto works with this vocabulary every day: it learns your brand from your website (your content DNA), drafts posts, carousels and short videos, reviews every post before it goes out and then measures real performance so you can reuse what works. Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between reach and views?
Reach counts unique accounts: someone who sees your post three times counts once. Views count every display or play, including repeats by the same account. One exception to keep in mind on Reels: Instagram counts an account as reached as soon as the Reel appears on screen, even if it doesn't play.
What is UGC on social media?
UGC (user-generated content) means photos, videos or reviews posted by customers rather than the brand. To repost it on your accounts, ask the creator's permission and credit them.
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization: the practices that help a brand get cited or recommended in answers from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
Is there a single formula for engagement rate?
No. You can calculate it on reach, on views or on followers, and the results differ. What matters is using the same formula every time you compare your posts.
